From Frock Coat to Fatigues: The Military Jacket

It's unsurprising given fashion's tendency towards the cyclical that yet again this style-darling is back in the limelight. According to Elle Magazine, the Military Jacket is back in style and we love to see it. Epaulettes, aiguillette, cargo pockets, and double breasted buttons: we've seen it all over the years. It makes us wonder at what point we simply admit that something is not a trend but rather a classic.

Our own take on the military jacket has seen evolution from iteration to iteration. From our frock coat to this season's cropped Hendrix Jacket, we love a rockstar staple.

Whether it's a long frock coat or a cropped army jacket, the aesthetic can be strangely flexible, adding a cool edge to any outfit. In fact, throughout the decades, our favourite rockers have thought the same. Jimi Hendrix, Michael Jackson, Janet Jackson, Prince, and the Beatles to name a small sample of the icons who styled themselves in military attire.

To learn more about the fashion of the Beatles in particular, we recommend Deidre Kelly's book Fashioning the Beatles which takes a deep look at the band's style and influences from their first recording to their last concert. On April 19th, we sat alongside Deirdre, and designers David Dixon and Joey Gollish to discuss the Beatles' influences on fashion at the Art Gallery of Ontario.
